In Queenstown, you're truly spoilt for choice!

Queenstown is one of those places where you're genuinely spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful scenery. From crystal-clear lakes and dramatic mountain ranges to quiet bays, native bush and alpine landscapes, there are so many incredible backdrops for your photoshoot.

But with so many options, knowing where to start can feel a little overwhelming, especially if you're visiting Queenstown for the first time.

As a Queenstown photographer, I'm lucky enough to spend a lot of time exploring these places and photographing couples, families, maternity sessions and surprise proposals around the region. Each location has its own character, and the best one for you will depend on the kind of scenery you love, how much walking you're happy to do and the experience you're hoping for.

Whether you're planning a romantic couples session, celebrating a growing family, organising a surprise proposal or simply wanting some beautiful photos together while visiting New Zealand, I've put together this guide to some of my favourite Queenstown photoshoot locations.

I'll cover what makes each place special, the pros and cons to consider, how accessible they are and who I'd recommend them for. Hopefully, by the end, you'll have a better idea of which spot feels right for you!

Jack's Point in Winter

Jack's Point

Best for: dramatic mountain views, adventurous couples and sunset sessions.

If you're looking for those big, dramatic Queenstown views, Jack's Point is hard to beat.

With The Remarkables rising behind the landscape and Lake Wakatipu stretching into the distance, it's a beautiful place for photos that feel a little more rugged and adventurous. The rocky terrain, open hillsides and natural textures give this location a completely different feel from a traditional garden or lakeside setting.

It's one of my favourite spots for couples who want something a little less conventional, particularly if you love the idea of exploring together and capturing a mixture of relaxed portraits and those in-between moments.

Jack's Point is also a wonderful option for surprise proposals. There are some beautiful viewpoints, and with a little planning, we can find a spot that feels more private than some of Queenstown's better-known tourist locations.

Jacks Point at sunset

The pros

  • Incredible views towards The Remarkables and the surrounding landscape.
  • A rugged, natural backdrop that feels distinctly New Zealand.
  • Beautiful light around sunset and throughout the seasons.
  • A great option to find a quiet spot for proposals, couples and maternity sessions.
  • Loads of space to run around for families
  • Plenty of opportunities for natural, candid photographs with movement and variety.

The cons

  • Some viewpoints require walking over uneven or rocky ground.
  • The landscape is exposed, so wind can be a factor.
  • There are no toilet or changing facilities.
  • You'll want comfortable footwear for moving between locations.
  • Some areas can still attract other visitors, so privacy can't be guaranteed.

Golden hour at Jacks Point in Summer

Accessibility

To reach the best spots that Jacks Point has to offer, walking over uneven and uphill terrain is required, the photo location is roughly a five minute walk from the nearest parking. Jacks Point may not be the most suitable if you have mobility considerations.

My recommendation

I'd suggest Jack's Point if you love dramatic scenery, want those iconic Queenstown photos and don't mind a short walk to reach the views. It's particularly beautiful for couples, families and proposals, especially when the evening light starts to soften.

You can see more of this location in my Jack's Point photoshoot guide.

Sunset at Homestead Bay

Homestead Bay

Best for: couples, families with little ones, maternity sessions and anyone wanting beautiful views with minimal walking.

Homestead Bay is one of my favourite spots for photoshoots around Queenstown. It offers beautiful views across Lake Wakatipu towards The Remarkables, with a natural lakeside setting that feels relaxed and distinctly Queenstown.

One of the things I love most about this location is how much scenery we can enjoy without needing to walk very far. We can create a lovely variety of images close to the car, making it a particularly good option for families with babies and very young children, maternity sessions or anyone who would prefer to avoid a longer walk.

The shoreline and surrounding landscape also offer a lovely mix of textures, from the lake and mountains to the rocky edges and natural grasses.

For those willing to brave the cold, you can dip your toes in the lake or if you'd rather stay dry, it's perfect for skimming stones!

Homestead Bay offers both mountain and lake backdrops

The pros

  • Beautiful views across Lake Wakatipu towards The Remarkables.
  • Convenient access to lakeside scenery without needing a hike.
  • Particularly practical for families with babies and toddlers.
  • A lovely option for maternity sessions and relaxed couples photos.
  • Plenty of opportunities for natural, candid photographs.
  • Easy to combine with other nearby locations if you'd like a little more variety.

The cons

  • The shoreline is rocky, so can be a little tricky to walk along if you have limited mobility
  • The area can be exposed to wind and changing weather.
  • Other visitors may be around, its a popular spot with locals, especially during sunny, warm evenings
  • There are no toilets or changing facilities

Accessibility

Homestead Bay is one of the locations I'd consider first for anyone wanting beautiful scenery with less walking. You can get close to the photo spots by car, although the shoreline itself is uneven and may not be suitable for everyone.

For families with very young children, the shorter distance from the car can make a real difference. If you have specific mobility requirements, let me know beforehand so we can plan the most suitable route and meeting point.

My recommendation

If you love mountain and lake views but don't want to walk far, Homestead Bay is a fantastic option. It's particularly well suited to families with little ones who want beautiful outdoor photographs without turning the session into a big adventure.

You can find out more in my Homestead Bay photoshoot guide.

A couples session at tranquil Moke Lake

Moke Lake

Best for: couples, proposals and anyone dreaming of peaceful alpine scenery.

Moke Lake is one of those places that feels a little removed from the rest of the world. Surrounded by rolling hills and mountains, with beautiful reflections across the water on a still day, it's a gorgeous option if you're looking for that quintessential New Zealand landscape and its only a short drive from central Queenstown but feels a million miles away!

It's particularly beautiful in the early morning or evening, when the light softens across the mountains and the lake can become almost mirror-like. Depending on the season, you might find golden grasses, fresh green hillsides, mist hanging over the water or snow on the surrounding peaks.

It's a lovely choice for couples who love the outdoors and want their photos to feel a little more adventurous without needing to commit to a full hiking session.

A couple embraces in soft focus beside a calm mountain lake, with golden hills and distant peaks rising behind them at sunset.

Moke Lake providing the beautiful backdrop for this couples session

The pros

  • Beautiful mountain scenery and the possibility of stunning lake reflections.
  • A peaceful, natural atmosphere that feels miles away from the centre of Queenstown whilst only being a short drive.
  • Gorgeous seasonal variety, from golden summer grasses to snowy winter landscapes.
  • A wonderful setting for romantic couples sessions and surprise proposals.
  • Beautiful photographs can be created close to the lakeside without needing to walk far.

The cons

  • The access road is unsealed and winding, so allow extra driving time and take care in changing weather conditions.
  • The area can be exposed to wind and cool weather, temperatures can feel considerably colder than in town, particularly in the morning and during winter.
  • Although it can feel wonderfully peaceful, it's not guaranteed to be quiet, particularly during busy summer periods as many locals and tourists camp at the nearby campsite.

Even in the rain, Moke Lake works beautifully for a family photoshoot

Accessibility

You can reach areas near the lake without needing to walk far from the parking. However, the ground around the water can be uneven, muddy or rocky.

You will need a car to reach Moke Lake, there is no public transport here from Queenstown. The gravel access road is also worth considering if you're driving a low-clearance vehicle. During Winter and Spring, a 4WD may be required.

There is a drop toilet available at Moke Lake.

My recommendation

Moke Lake is ideal if you love open landscapes and want your photos to feel peaceful and connected to nature. I'd especially recommend it for couples who don't mind a little adventure and are happy to embrace whatever the weather brings.

If you're considering Moke Lake, check out these recent sessions from a sunrise couples photoshoot and a rainy family photoshoot.

There is an additional $100 travel fee for sessions at Moke Lake.

Queenstown gardens provides a handy central location for photo sessions

Queenstown Gardens

Best for: visitors staying in central Queenstown, and anyone wanting a convenient location without needing a car.

Queenstown Gardens is a handy option if you're staying in the centre of town and don't have access to a vehicle. Located beside Lake Wakatipu, the gardens offer established pathways, mature trees, grassy areas and glimpses of the lake and surrounding mountains.

It's a different look from the dramatic, open landscapes at Jack's Point or Moke Lake, with a more traditional park setting and plenty of greenery. Depending on the season, you can find everything from fresh spring growth to autumn colours.

While it wouldn't be my first choice for those big, uninterrupted mountain views, it does have its uses, particularly for visitors who want somewhere close to town without needing to arrange transport.

Queenstown Gardens winter vow renewal ceremony

The pros

  • Within walking distance of central Queenstown.
  • A mixture of trees, greenery, open spaces and lake views.
  • Established pathways and some flatter areas.
  • A convenient option for visitors without transport.
  • Relatively easy to combine with a walk around town or another activity.

The cons

  • It can get very busy, especially during summer, weekends and peak tourist periods.
  • The scenery is more garden-like than the dramatic, open mountain landscapes Queenstown is famous for.
  • You may encounter other visitors in the background or need to work around people using the pathways.
  • The overall look changes with the seasons, and some areas can feel less colourful during winter.
  • Queenstown gardens can lose the sun very early in the day, especially during winter, so the winter lighting can be tricky to work around photography wise.

Accessibility

The gardens have established pathways, including flatter routes around the lake, making them a more accessible option than locations involving rocky shorelines or uphill walks. However, surfaces and gradients vary throughout the gardens, so the exact meeting point and route are worth considering if you're bringing a pram or have mobility requirements.

My recommendation: I'd consider Queenstown Gardens if you're staying in central Queenstown without a car, or if you'd prefer somewhere close to town. If you have transport and are hoping for those iconic, dramatic Queenstown mountain views, I'd generally recommend one of the other locations in this guide for a more private photoshoot experience.

There is no travel fee for sessions at Queenstown Gardens.

Helicopter photoshoots

Best for: adventurous couples, surprise proposals and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

If you're dreaming of something truly special, a helicopter photoshoot is another option worth considering.

One of the incredible things about Queenstown is how quickly the landscape changes as you leave the lakeside and head into the mountains. A helicopter can take you to remote alpine locations that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to reach, opening up a completely different range of backdrops for your photographs.

Imagine standing together on a mountain ridge, surrounded by snow-covered peaks, or celebrating an engagement with an enormous alpine landscape stretching out behind you. It's an unforgettable option for couples who want their photoshoot to feel like a real adventure.

Couple in dark winter jackets holding hands while standing on a snowy mountain slope, facing vast snow-covered peaks under a cloudy sky.

The pros

  • Access to remote alpine locations and incredible mountain scenery.
  • A unique, memorable experience rather than a standard photoshoot.
  • The opportunity for beautiful, dramatic images that are difficult to recreate elsewhere.
  • A fantastic option for adventurous proposals and intimate elopements.
  • A great way to guarantee your own private photoshoot location

The cons

  • Helicopter flights may not be feasible within your budget
  • Flights and landing locations are weather-dependent, and conditions can change quickly.
  • Time at the landing location may be limited, depending on the selected flight package.
  • You'll need to feel comfortable flying in a helicopter

Accessibility

A helicopter can transport you directly to incredible views, which might otherwise not be reachable, but a helicopter doesn't automatically make a location accessible. Getting in and out of the aircraft and the terrain at the landing site need to be considered. If you have specific mobility requirements, discuss these with the helicopter operator before booking.

My recommendation: I'd consider a helicopter if you want a genuinely adventurous experience and have room in your budget. It's particularly special for proposals and elopements, but it does require more planning and flexibility than a standard session. I'd also recommend confirming whether your chosen flight includes a landing, how long you'll have on the ground and what happens if the weather prevents you from flying.

Which Queenstown photoshoot location is right for you?

If you're still undecided, here's a quick summary to help narrow things down.

  • For dramatic mountain views: Jack's Point.
  • For families with babies and little ones: Homestead Bay.
  • For peaceful alpine scenery: Moke Lake.
  • For visitors without transport: Queenstown Gardens.
  • For a once-in-a-lifetime adventure: A helicopter photoshoot.

Of course, these are just starting points. The best location for you will also depend on the season, the weather, the time of day and the kind of photographs you want to create and if you have another location in mind, I'm always happy to travel!

A few things to consider before your photoshoot

The weather

Queenstown's weather can change quickly, and every location responds differently to wind, cloud and rain. A cloudy day doesn't mean we need to cancel, softer light can be beautiful for photographs, and we can often adapt our plans to suit the conditions.

If you're visiting Queenstown for a short time, I'd recommend leaving a spare day in your itinerary if possible. This is especially helpful for surprise proposals or sessions at more remote locations.

The time of day

The best time for your photoshoot depends on the location and the season. Early mornings can offer calmer conditions and quieter surroundings, while evening sessions can provide beautiful, soft light. Some locations work particularly well at sunset, but we'll consider the direction of the light and the time of year when planning your session.

What to wear

Your chosen location can influence what you'll feel comfortable wearing. If we're walking over rocks or uneven ground, practical footwear is a good idea. Queenstown temperatures can change quickly when the sun drops, so bringing a warm layer is always sensible.

Check out this blog for a few more tips about what to wear...

Accessibility and comfort

You don't need to be an experienced hiker to have beautiful photographs taken in Queenstown. There are plenty of incredible places where we can create a lovely gallery without walking far. If you're bringing young children, are pregnant, have mobility requirements or simply prefer an easy-access spot, let me know so we can choose somewhere suitable.

Privacy for proposals

If you're planning a surprise proposal, the location is only one part of the planning. We'll also consider the time of day, likely visitor numbers, where you'll stand and how I'll capture the moment without giving away the surprise. No location can guarantee complete privacy, but choosing the right spot and timing can make a big difference.
