Homestead Bay - two incredible backdrops in one stunning location
If you're dreaming of a relaxed lakeside photoshoot with incredible mountain views, Homestead Bay is one of my favourite locations in Queenstown.
Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the dramatic peaks of The Remarkables, Homestead Bay offers a peaceful setting that's perfect for couples, families, maternity sessions and anyone wanting to capture beautiful memories against one of Queenstown's most iconic landscapes.
One of the things I love most about photographing here is the variety. Although it's all within one location, Homestead Bay offers two distinct backdrops, giving your gallery plenty of diversity without needing to travel far.
Why I Love Homestead Bay
Homestead Bay has a wonderfully calm, natural feel. It's less busy than some of Queenstown's more well-known photo locations, allowing us to slow down, enjoy the scenery and focus on capturing genuine moments together.
The changing light here is beautiful throughout the year, and whether the lake is perfectly still or the mountains are covered in fresh snow, it always feels peaceful and timeless.
And one of the biggest advantages of choosing Homestead Bay is that we can create two very different looks during your session.
The Lakeside
If you've imagined photos by the water's edge, this part of Homestead Bay is perfect.
We'll photograph along the shoreline with Lake Wakatipu stretching out behind you and the mountains rising in the distance. On warmer days, many couples and families choose to kick off their shoes and paddle in the lake, creating playful, candid photographs that feel relaxed and full of joy.
It's an especially lovely option for young families, adventurous couples or anyone wanting natural, storytelling images.
The Mountain View
Just a short walk from the shoreline, the scenery changes completely.
Here, the wide open landscape frames The Remarkables beautifully, creating a dramatic alpine backdrop that's unmistakably Queenstown. The golden grasses, winding pathways and expansive mountain views offer a timeless setting that works beautifully in every season.
Is Homestead Bay Easy to Access?
Yes.
Homestead Bay is only around 15–20 minutes from central Queenstown and has convenient parking nearby.
Very little walking is required to reach the main photo locations, making it a wonderful choice for:
- Families with young children
- Couples
- Maternity sessions
- Surprise proposals
- Visitors wanting beautiful scenery without a long hike
- Multi-generational family sessions
The paths are generally gentle and easy to navigate, allowing us to spend more time enjoying the session and less time walking.
Homestead Bay Throughout the Seasons
One of the things I love about Homestead Bay is how beautifully it changes throughout the year.
Summer
Warm evenings invite you to wander along the shoreline, enjoy the lake and soak up those long golden sunsets.
Autumn
Cooler temperatures and crisp light create a beautiful atmosphere, with subtle seasonal colours adding warmth to the landscape.
Winter
Winter transforms Homestead Bay into something truly magical. Snow-covered peaks provide an incredible backdrop, while the soft winter light creates clean, timeless photographs.
Spring
Fresh greenery, blossoming plants and longer days make spring a lovely time for relaxed family and couples sessions.
What Time of Day is Best?
Sunset is my favourite time to photograph at Homestead Bay.
As the sun drops lower behind the mountains, the light becomes beautifully soft and flattering, creating warm tones across the landscape and lake. It's the perfect time for relaxed, natural photographs.
Sunrise is another wonderful option if you're looking for a quieter experience, with calm water and peaceful surroundings often making the location feel as though you have it all to yourselves.
What Should You Wear?
Homestead Bay's natural colours pair beautifully with soft, neutral clothing.
Creams, beiges, earthy greens, soft browns, muted blues and rust tones all complement the surrounding landscape without overpowering it.
Layering also works wonderfully here, particularly during autumn and winter. Cosy knitwear, coats and scarves not only keep you warm but also add beautiful texture to your photographs.

Can We Combine Homestead Bay with Jack's Point?
Absolutely.
One of the best things about Homestead Bay is its location. Jack's Point is just a few minutes drive away, making it incredibly easy to combine both during a longer session if you'd like even more variety in your gallery.
While Homestead Bay offers beautiful lakeside scenery and sweeping mountain views, Jack's Point adds golden tussock, walking trails and a different perspective of The Remarkables. Together, they complement each other perfectly and create a wonderfully diverse collection of photographs.
