Wondering what to wear for your Queenstown photoshoot?
Choosing what to wear for your photoshoot can feel surprisingly overwhelming. One of the first questions I receive after someone books is, "What should we wear?"
The good news is that there isn't one "perfect" outfit. The most beautiful photos happen when you feel comfortable, confident and like yourself. My role is to help guide you towards outfits that not only suit you but also complement Queenstown's incredible landscapes.
Whether we're photographing your family at Jack's Point, exploring Moke Lake, wandering along the shores of Lake Wakatipu or flying into the mountains by helicopter, these tips will help you look and feel your best.
Choose Colours Inspired by Nature
Queenstown is filled with natural textures and earthy colours, so clothing that reflects the landscape always photographs beautifully.
Some of my favourite colours include:
- Cream and ivory
- Beige and camel
- Soft browns
- Olive and sage green
- Rust and terracotta
- Dusty blue
- Soft grey
- Muted blush
These colours complement the mountains, lake, grasses and alpine scenery without competing for attention.
Bright neon colours, large logos and very busy patterns tend to draw the eye away from the people in the photograph, so they're usually best avoided.
Coordinate, Don't Match
One of the biggest misconceptions is that everyone should wear exactly the same thing.
Instead, think about creating a colour palette rather than a uniform.
For example:
- Mum in a cream knit
- Dad in an olive overshirt
- One child in rust
- Another in beige
The outfits all work together without looking identical, creating a much more natural and timeless feel.
Different fabrics also help add depth to your images. Linen, wool, knitwear, cotton and flowing fabrics all photograph beautifully.
Shoes Matter More Than You Think
One thing many people don't consider is footwear.
Many of Queenstown's most beautiful locations include gravel paths, uneven ground, grass or lakeside beaches.
Comfortable shoes make moving between locations much easier.
If you've been dreaming of photographs in heels, smart shoes or barefoot by the lake, that's absolutely possible. I often recommend arriving in comfortable walking shoes and changing into your chosen footwear once we reach the best photo locations.
Dress for the Season
Queenstown experiences four very distinct seasons, and dressing appropriately makes a huge difference to how much you enjoy your session.
Summer
Lightweight dresses, linen shirts, cotton fabrics and breathable layers work perfectly. Even in summer, temperatures can drop once the sun disappears behind the mountains, so bringing a light jacket is always worthwhile.
Autumn
Autumn is one of my favourite times to photograph. Layering works beautifully, with knitted jumpers, jackets, boots and earthy colours complementing the changing landscape.
Winter
Winter sessions are absolutely magical, but staying warm is key.
Don't be afraid to wear beautiful coats, scarves, hats and chunky knitwear—they not only keep you comfortable but also add texture and personality to your photographs.
Thermal layers hidden underneath your outfit can make a huge difference without changing how your clothes look.
Spring
Spring weather can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers gives you flexibility if temperatures change throughout your session.
Dress for Movement
The best photos happen when you're interacting naturally rather than standing still.
Think about clothing that allows you to walk, cuddle, pick up little ones, twirl, laugh and explore comfortably.
Flowing dresses, oversized knitwear, scarves and jackets all create beautiful movement and add another layer of storytelling to your images.
Accessories
Simple accessories can complete an outfit without becoming distracting.
Consider delicate jewellery, scarves, hats or a beautiful coat in winter.
Try to empty bulky phones, wallets and keys from your pockets before we start photographing.
What About Helicopter Photoshoots?
Helicopter sessions are an unforgettable experience, but mountain conditions are very different from Queenstown itself.
Even during summer, alpine locations can be significantly colder and windier than down in town.
I recommend bringing:
- Warm layers
- A quality jacket or coat
- Closed-toe shoes or boots with good grip
- Sunglasses (for before and after the photos)
- Hair ties if you have long hair
- Lip balm during colder months
Flowy dresses look incredible in the mountains, but it's worth remembering that the wind can be surprisingly strong. If you're planning to wear a dress, choosing one with a little weight in the fabric usually works better than something very lightweight.
The Most Important Advice
The most beautiful outfit is one that feels like you.
Choose clothes that fit well, make you feel comfortable and reflect your personality. When you feel relaxed and confident, it naturally shines through in your photographs.
After booking your session, I'm always happy to help if you'd like me to look over outfit options before your photoshoot. I've even had clients send me photos of a few different outfits, and I'm more than happy to help you choose what will photograph best!
