Jack's Point - Queenstown's best photoshoot spot!

If you're looking for a beautiful location for your Queenstown photoshoot, Jack's Point is my top recommendation! Whether you're planning a couples session, family photos, a surprise proposal or simply want to capture your time in New Zealand, Jack's Point offers some of the most stunning scenery in the region.

As a Queenstown photographer, it's one of my favourite places to photograph. It's incredibly versatile, easy to access, and looks beautiful throughout every season. I've photographed everything from young families and adventurous couples, and no two sessions have ever looked the same.

Why I Love Jack's Point

One of the biggest reasons I recommend Jack's Point is how much variety we can capture without having to walk far.

Within just a short distance, you'll find spectacular mountain backdrops, the shores of Lake Wakatipu, golden tussock grasses, winding walking trails and dramatic alpine scenery. The changing light throughout the day gives every session its own unique feel, and there's always somewhere beautiful to photograph, no matter the conditions.

Unlike some of Queenstown's more popular locations, Jack's Point also tends to feel much quieter and more relaxed, making it a lovely choice if you'd rather avoid large crowds. There's also plenty of space to roam free and let your children run wild, making it a perfect spot for family shoots.

Is Jack's Point Easy to Access?

Absolutely.

Jack's Point is approximately 20 minutes from central Queenstown and has convenient parking close to where we begin your session.

One of the things many of my clients appreciate is that very little walking is required to reach some incredible viewpoints. We can easily adapt the session depending on who we're photographing, making it suitable for:

  • Families with young children
  • Couples
  • Surprise proposals
  • Sunrise/sunset sessions
  • Maternity sessions
  • Multi-generational family photos
  • Anyone who prefers not to walk long distances

There are also longer walking paths nearby if you'd like to explore a little further during your session.

What Time of Day is Best?

Sunrise and sunset both work beautifully at Jack's Point.

Sunset is my most requested option, as the soft evening light creates a warm glow across the mountains and lake. During winter, sunset also arrives earlier in the day, making evening sessions a little easier for families with young children.

Sunrise offers a quieter atmosphere and often wonderfully still conditions, perfect if you're hoping for a peaceful experience with fewer people around.

Jack's Point Throughout the Seasons

One of the reasons I return to Jack's Point so often is that it truly shines all year round.

Summer

Long evenings, golden grasses and warm temperatures make summer perfect for relaxed sessions by the lake.

Autumn

Autumn brings crisp mornings, beautiful colours and fresh mountain air. While Jack's Point itself remains fairly neutral in colour, there are lovely pockets of autumn foliage nearby that can easily be incorporated into your session.

Winter

Winter is perhaps my favourite season here. Snow-capped mountains provide an incredible backdrop, and the softer winter light creates beautiful conditions for photography. Even on chilly days, the scenery is absolutely worth it.

Spring

Spring brings fresh greenery, longer days and a sense of new life across the landscape. It's a wonderful time for family and couples sessions before the busy summer season begins.

Does Jack's Point Work in Bad Weather?

Yes!

One of the reasons it's become one of my go-to locations is that it photographs beautifully in a wide range of weather conditions.

Soft cloudy skies create gorgeous, flattering light, while moody clouds over The Remarkables can add drama and atmosphere to your images. Even after rain, the mountains often reveal fresh snow, creating some of the most spectacular scenery of the year.

As your photographer, I'll always keep an eye on the forecast and recommend the best timing for your session if the weather is looking unpredictable.

What Should You Wear?

I always recommend choosing outfits that complement the beautiful natural surroundings. Soft, earthy tones such as creams, beiges, soft browns, olive greens, rust tones and muted blues photograph beautifully against the golden tussock, lake and mountain backdrop.

If you're coming as a couple or family, aim to coordinate your outfits rather than matching exactly. Mixing complementary colours and textures, such as denim, knits, linen or flowy fabrics, creates a timeless and relaxed look.

Comfort is just as important as style. The location includes gravel paths and grassy areas, so practical footwear is recommended, especially during wetter and cooler months. In winter, adding cosy layers like knitwear, coats and scarves not only keeps you warm but also photographs beautifully against the alpine scenery.

Most importantly, wear something that feels like you. When you feel comfortable and confident, it always shines through in your photos.
