Maternity Photoshoot at Homestead Bay, Queenstown
There’s something really special about this season, that quiet pause before everything changes.
I recently spent the evening down at Homestead Bay in Queenstown with Lauren, Jamie and their fur baby Frankie, capturing a maternity session to mark this wonderful chapter before their little one arrives.
With The Remarkables providing the perfect backdrop and that soft evening light rolling in, it was one of those sessions that didn’t need much, just a beautiful location, a relaxed pace, and a couple enjoying this special time together.
Why Queenstown is perfect for maternity photos
Queenstown is one of the best places in New Zealand for maternity photography. Between the mountains, lakes and wide open spaces, it gives you a backdrop that feels both epic and intimate at the same time.
Homestead Bay is one of my favourite spots for maternity sessions in Queenstown. It’s quiet, open, and has incredible views across Lake Wakatipu towards The Remarkables, especially at golden hour. It’s also an easy, accessible location, which makes it ideal during pregnancy when you want something relaxed and stress-free.
If you’re looking for a Queenstown maternity photographer, choosing a location like this means you get natural, timeless images without needing to travel far or do anything too strenuous.
A relaxed, natural approach to maternity photography
My approach to maternity sessions is always simple, no stiff posing, no pressure, just creating space for you to be yourselves.
For Lauren and Jamie, that meant walking through the long grass, taking in the views, and letting Frankie roam alongside them. Some of the best moments came from just letting things unfold naturally, a quiet laugh, a hand on the bump, a pause to take it all in.
These are the kinds of images that feel the most meaningful and true to this special moment in your lives.
Including your dog in your maternity photoshoot
Bringing Frankie along made the session feel even more personal. For so many couples, their dog is already a huge part of the family, so it only makes sense to include them.
Queenstown is incredibly dog-friendly, and locations like Homestead Bay are perfect for including your fur baby in your maternity photos. It keeps things fun, relaxed, and adds another layer of personality to your gallery.
If you’re planning a Queenstown maternity photoshoot with your dog, I always recommend choosing an open outdoor location where they can move freely and feel comfortable.
When to book your maternity photoshoot
The best time for maternity photos is usually between 28–34 weeks. At this stage, your bump is beautifully visible, but you’re still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience.
Queenstown’s seasons all offer something different:
- Summer: long evenings and golden light
- Autumn: warm tones and soft colours
- Winter: snowy mountain backdrops
- Spring: fresh greens and quiet landscapes
No matter the time of year, there’s always a beautiful setting for a Queenstown maternity session.
Planning your Queenstown maternity session
If you’re thinking about booking a maternity photoshoot in Queenstown, I recommend keeping things simple:
- Choose a location with space and good light (like Homestead Bay)
- Wear something comfortable that you feel incredible in
- Bring along anything meaningful (including your dog!)
- Don’t worry about posing, I’ll guide you naturally
The goal is always to create images that feel like you, not something overly styled or forced.
