A Surprise Proposal Hidden Inside a Queenstown Maternity Shoot

Sometimes a photoshoot turns into something even more special than anyone expected.

That was exactly the case for Michael and Thea, who were travelling around New Zealand in their campervan and preparing to welcome twins. Michael got in touch to organise a maternity photoshoot during their time in Queenstown, but there was one very important detail Thea didn’t know about...

He was also planning to propose!

A maternity photoshoot with a secret plan

Thea thought they were simply heading out for a maternity photoshoot at beautiful Jack’s Point in Queenstown, capturing some photographs together while they travelled around New Zealand before their twins arrived.

Meanwhile, Michael and I had been quietly chatting behind the scenes about how we could make the proposal a complete surprise.

That is one of my favourite things about photographing surprise proposals, all the excitement, anticipation and build up with planning these moments, especially when the person being proposed to has absolutely no idea what is coming.

The plan was to start with the maternity photoshoot as normal, giving us plenty of time to capture photographs of the two of them together and make the proposal feel completely natural.

Then, during golden hour, just as the sun was dipping behind the mountains, Michael would pop the very important question.

Why Jack’s Point was the perfect location

Jack’s Point is one of my favourite locations for Queenstown couples photography and proposals. It has incredible views across the mountains and Lake Wakatipu, while still offering plenty of quiet spots, where you can escape the crowds.

For a surprise proposal, having a little privacy can make such a difference. It gives you space to enjoy the moment without feeling like an audience is watching, while still having that unmistakable Queenstown scenery in the background.

And for maternity photographs, it works beautifully too. The combination of dramatic mountains, open landscapes and soft evening light gives the photographs a relaxed, natural feel.

Golden hour and a very special question

As the evening light started to soften, we found our spot with no one around and continued taking photographs as planned.

Then came the moment Michael had been waiting for.

He got down on one knee and asked Thea to marry him.

After all the secret planning, it was pretty special to finally see it happen. We then had plenty of time afterwards to celebrate and capture some more photographs together, including photographs of the two of them with that very exciting new chapter ahead of them.

There was something particularly lovely about photographing these two moments together. They were already celebrating becoming a family of four, and now they had another huge milestone to add to the list.

Photographing the moments that matter

This is exactly why I love photographing couples, proposals and maternity sessions.

It is not just about having beautiful photographs of a particular location. It is about documenting a moment in your life that you will never get back.

For Michael and Thea, these photographs will always take them back to their New Zealand road trip, travelling around in their campervan before their twins arrived, the mountains around Queenstown, that golden evening at Jack’s Point and the moment they got engaged.

I feel incredibly lucky to be trusted to capture moments like this, especially when there is a surprise involved and I get to be part of the planning behind the scenes.

Congratulations Michael and Thea. What an exciting chapter you have ahead of you!

Planning a surprise proposal in Queenstown?

If you're thinking about proposing during your trip to Queenstown, a Jack’s Point proposal can be a beautiful option if you're looking for incredible mountain views without being surrounded by crowds.

I can also help you plan the logistics of keeping the proposal a surprise, from choosing the location and timing to working out exactly how I'll be there without giving the game away.

For couples looking for something even more adventurous, there are also plenty of options around Queenstown for incorporating a helicopter proposal, mountain location or another scenic South Island destination.

If you're planning a surprise proposal, maternity session or couples photoshoot in Queenstown, I'd love to hear what you're dreaming up!
