Why So Many Couples Choose to Have a First Look on Their Wedding Day

As a New Zealand wedding photographer, one of the questions I’m often asked is: “Should we do a first look?”

It’s such a personal choice, but over the years, I’ve seen so many couples absolutely love having that quiet, emotional moment together before the ceremony. A first look can completely transform the flow of your day, helping you feel relaxed, present, and connected from the very beginning.

What Is a First Look?

A first look is a private, emotional moment between the couple before the ceremony, when you see each other for the first time without all your guests watching. It’s just the two of you (and your photographer capturing those genuine reactions from a distance).

Traditionally, couples waited until the ceremony to see each other. But more and more couples are choosing a first look because it creates space for calm, connection, and some truly beautiful first look wedding photos. As a New Zealand wedding photographer, I’ve seen how this simple choice can completely transform the mood of the day, from a rush of nerves to a relaxed, joy-filled celebration.

Why Couples LOVE Having a First Look

A Quiet, Emotional Moment Together

Wedding days move fast, and it’s easy to feel swept up in the excitement. A first look gives you a few precious minutes to just be together before everything begins, a chance to breathe, connect, and take in the emotion of the day.

It’s often one of the most heartfelt moments I photograph. There’s something really special about capturing those genuine reactions and tears without hundreds of eyes watching.

Calms the Pre-Ceremony Nerves

If you’re feeling nervous before walking down the aisle, seeing your partner can make all the difference. A first look helps release that tension and lets you share the excitement together, so by the time the ceremony starts, you’re already calm, smiling, and fully present.

Gorgeous Photos While Everything’s Fresh

Your hair and makeup are perfect, your outfits are crisp, and the light is often beautiful earlier in the day, ideal for capturing timeless, natural portraits of the two of you. It’s also the perfect time for bridal party photos, meaning you won’t have to rush through them later in the day.

Having these photos taken before the ceremony means your photographer can focus fully on capturing genuine moments afterward, not staging group shots while your guests are waiting.

More Time to Celebrate With Your Guests

One of the biggest perks of having a first look is the impact on your wedding day timeline. By getting your couple and bridal party portraits done earlier, you can jump straight into mingling, canapés, and cocktails after the ceremony, instead of disappearing for a photo session.

You’ve spent months (or years!) planning your wedding and gathering your favourite people together in one place, a first look gives you even more time to enjoy it all!

The Best of Both Worlds

A first look gives you the best of both worlds: emotional and practical. You still get that “wow” moment when you see each other for the first time, but in a calm, personal setting, and with beautiful photos to remember it by.

Then, once the ceremony begins, you can relax, knowing the big portraits are already done and the rest of the day is all about celebrating with the people you love most.

Things to Consider If You’re Planning a First Look

While a first look can be a beautiful addition to your day, there are a few practical things worth considering:

⏰ You’ll Need to Start Getting Ready Earlier

Because you’ll be seeing each other and taking photos before the ceremony, your prep timeline will need to shift earlier. This might mean an earlier start for hair, makeup and getting into your dress.

💄 Hair, Makeup, and Dress May Not Be Quite as Fresh for the Aisle

If your first look happens a few hours before the ceremony, there’s always a chance your makeup might need a quick touch-up or your dress could pick up a little dust or dirt from moving around. It’s nothing a quick refresh can’t fix, but it’s something to keep in mind, especially for outdoor or windy locations.

🌦️ Lighting and Weather Considerations

Depending on the season and ceremony time, a first look may take place in the harsher midday light. Your photographer can guide you with this and help find the best spots, but if you’ve always dreamt of golden hour portraits, you might still want a few extra photos later in the evening when the light is softer.

💞 It’s Not for Everyone

Some couples truly love the anticipation of seeing each other for the first time as they walk down the aisle, and that’s just as special. A first look can be emotional, but it’s a different kind of moment than the traditional aisle reveal. Think about what feels most meaningful for you.

Should You Have a First Look?

There’s no rulebook when it comes to wedding planning. Some couples love the tradition of seeing each other for the first time at the aisle, while others can’t imagine not sharing that quiet pre-ceremony moment together.

If you’re torn, talk it through with your wedding photographer. A well-planned first look timeline can help you get the best of both worlds, meaningful photos, a relaxed flow, and plenty of time to soak in every moment of your day.
